Question: Can you sneeze with your eyes open, or will your eyeballs pop out of the sockets?
Answer: I pulled out the big guns for this question. I went straight to Mythbusters on Discovery Channel for this one. They explain that your eyes are not attached to your nose, so even though a sneeze can come out of your nose at 200 miles per hour (say what????) it cannot transfer pressure to your eyes. They say that even if your eyelids WERE there to protect your eyeballs from popping out, they would fail because they are flimsy. The reason that your eyeballs stay in place is due to the muscles holding them. So why do your eyelids close when you sneeze? They say it’s simply a reflex. The nose and eyes are linked by the cranial nerve and when you sneeze, it triggers a blink. They also said that some people are capable of sneezing with their eyes open. That’s weird.
Don’t you hate when you sneeze while you’re driving? I feel like I am going sneeze into oncoming traffic sometimes!
